WHO RUNS THE WORLD, GIRLS.

Today I sat at a lunch table of six girls between the ages of 12 and 18. They were going around the table, one by one, sharing their ideas about what they wanted to do when they “grow up”.

As I looked from face to face, I recognized the enormous potential this group holds. They are all brilliant students. They all come from solid, intact families that love and support them. They will all go to college.

And underneath each beautiful face, I saw the questions. I saw the doubts, and I saw the desires. I saw the fears, and I saw the excitement that comes from knowing there are endless ways in which these braves souls will change the world.

Today we spoke of dreams, we spoke of callings, and we spoke of passions.

And what I to impart to all of my daughters, and especially these beautiful women today,  is, YES. You can. And if at all possible, you should go to the places where women, yes you, will be needed most.

And so, a poem, for you, my Freedom Fighters:

HALF THE SKY

Underneath the quiet beauty

of faces

unmarked by time

lies a war

between dreams, and shoulds and what ifs

And

what I want to say

is that

YES,

you can

and you should

because there are

millions of girls

around the world

that are waiting for you

to decide

if you are smart enough

and good enough

and strong enough.

The answer is

Yes

you

are.

And once you decide

there will be no turning back,

you will only look ahead

for your captives

waiting

for your keys
