Today I heard a client say, when speaking of his depression (and seeming paralysis) in moving forward, “You can’t really understand why it’s so hard unless you have been there”.

I’ve had the privilege of wading through the waters of depression, and coming up on the other side. I have held the hands of those struggling in the dark, and I have had the honor of walking alongside those who have found the light.

Again and again.

For everyone it looks a little different.

Here is my list of the top ten things that seem to shift people from paralysis into functional living with depression.

1) A shift in thinking

2) An earnest desire to move forward

3) A community of friends

4) A shift in environment

5) medication

6) exercise

7) prayer

8) service to others

9) making art

10) establishing rhythms of  healthy behaviors
